Scott Belleri Violin Studio

Suzuki Violin Teacher Scott Belleri

Scott Belleri began studying the violin at the age of 7, under the guidance of Suzuki teacher Elizabeth McClung. After acceptance into the Dreyfoos School of the Arts, where he studied violin performance and music theory, he began studying with Thomas Tsaggaris, Julliard violinist, co-founder and first conductor of the Palm Beach Symphony. While receiving his Suzuki teacher training from Martha Shackford, he began volunteering with the Portland Suzuki Project, a non-profit which provided free in-school violin classes in an underserved public school. He subsequently served on the board for three years. He also has a background in Alexander Technique and Feldenkrais.

Scott believes in Dr Suzuki's tenet that Every Child Can, given the proper environment and loving guidance. The combination of private and group lessons, musical immersion, and supportive parental involvement is the key to success. He also enjoys working with adult students, helping to cultivate their skill while they follow their individual interests. He believes that understanding proper body use is the key to good technique and creative expression.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What teaching methods do you use?

A: With younger students I use the Suzuki method for violin instruction. The Suzuki method emphasizes ear training, repetition, and learning in a nurturing environment. With adult students, I tend to take a traditional approach of combining etudes, scales, and appropriate repertoire to develop technique. I mainly teach classical music, but I have some background in various folk styles as well.

Q: What is the Suzuki method?

A: The Suzuki method is a teaching philosophy developed by Shinichi Suzuki that emphasizes learning music by ear, repetition, and in a nurturing environment. It is often compared to learning a language, where students learn to speak (play) first and then learn to read (music notation).

Q: Do you offer group lessons? Do you teach some students through a group lesson only?

A: I offer group lessons for violin, but they are intended to supplement private lessons. I believe that a combination of private and group instruction provides the best learning experience.

Q: What ages do you teach?

A: I teach ages 3 to adult.

Q: What learning materials do I need?

A: Please visit my Materials and Supplies page.

Q: What are your rates and policies?

A: My rates and policies are available here.

Q: How do I schedule a lesson?

A: You can schedule a lesson the contact link on this website. I will plan a call to discuss your needs and availability and find a time that works for you.

Q: Where can I get a violin? Do you provide violin rentals?

A: I can refer you to a luthier for rentals. My preferred luthier is Kaitlin Pugh - (503) 944-9764. Katlin offers rentals of quality instruments, and most of your monthly rental fee applies toward the purchase of a violin when you are ready to take that step. David Kerr is a larger violin shop that also provides quality instruments.

Q: Do you offer in-home lessons?

A: I teach lessons at my dedicated studio space in Southeast Portland. If you are interested in in-home lessons, I can consider this with a travel fee.
